A vulnerability was found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU 1.7.0 (Virtualization Software). It has been classified as problematic. Buffer overflow in hw/pci/pcie_aer.c in QEMU before 1.7.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a large log_num value in a savevm image.

The weakness was disclosed 02/18/2014 by Petr Matousek as Bug 1066353 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4529 since 06/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74047 (Fedora 20 : qemu-1.6.2-5.fc20 (2014-6288)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168804 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for xen (SUSE-SU-2016:1318-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
