Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple Safari up to 7.0.3 (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
WebKit, as used in Apple Safari before 6.1.4 and 7.x before 7.0.4, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site, a different vulnerability than other WebKit CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2014-05-21-1.
The weakness was published 05/21/2014 by Ian Beer (Cloudfuzzer) with Google Project Zero as HT6254 / APPLE-SA-2014-05-21-1 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-1344 since 01/08/2014. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80455 (FreeBSD : WebKit-gtk -- Multiple vulnerabilities (e9ccdb28-9802-11e4-9d9c-bcaec565249c)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167746 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for webkitgtk (SUSE-SU-2015:0688-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.1.4 or 7.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93336), Tenable (80455), SecurityFocus (BID 67553†), Secunia (SA58890†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030269†). Similar entries are available at VDB-13332, VDB-13331, VDB-13329 and VDB-13328. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
