Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple Safari up to 6.1.3/7.0.3 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown part of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
core/html/HTMLSelectElement.cpp in the DOM implementation in Blink, as used in Google Chrome before 34.0.1847.131 on Windows and OS X and before 34.0.1847.132 on Linux, does not properly check renderer state upon a focus event, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors that leverage "type confusion" for SELECT elements.
The weakness was released 05/21/2014 by John Butler with Blink Development Community as HT6254 / APPLE-SA-2014-05-21-1 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1731 since 01/29/2014. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73856 (Debian DSA-2920-1 : chromium-browser - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
