CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in TYPO3 up to 4.5.33/4.7.18/6.0.13/6.1.8/6.2.2 (Content Management System). This affects some unknown processing of the component HTTP Header Handler. The manipulation as part of a Host Header leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:

TYPO3 4.5.0 before 4.5.34, 4.7.0 before 4.7.19, 6.0.0 before 6.0.14, 6.1.0 before 6.1.9, and 6.2.0 before 6.2.3 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via a crafted HTTP Host header, related to "Host Spoofing."

The weakness was released 05/22/2014 by Helmut Hummel as TYPO3-CORE-SA-2014-001 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at typo3.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3941 since 06/03/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

TYPO3 uses the HTTP host-header to generate absolute URLs in several places like 404 handling, http(s) enforcement, password reset links and many more. Since the host header itself is provided by the client it can be forged to any value, even in a name based virtual hosts environment.

After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at skeletonscribe.net. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 386 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76135 (openSUSE Security Update : typo3-cms-4_5 (openSUSE-SU-2014:0813-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169121 (OpenSuSE Security Update for typo3-cms-4_7 (openSUSE-SU-2016:2114-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.5.34, 4.7.19, 6.0.14, 6.1.9 or 6.2.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

These versions introduce a new configuration option: $GLOBALS['TYPO3_CONF_VARS']['SYS']['trustedHostsPattern']. This option can contain either the value "SERVER_NAME" or a regular expression pattern that matches all host names that are considered trustworthy for the particular TYPO3 installation. "SERVER_NAME" is the default value shipped with the above mentioned TYPO3 versions. With this option value in effect, TYPO3 checks the currently submitted host-header against the SERVER_NAME variable.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93464), Tenable (76135), SecurityFocus (BID 67626†) and Secunia (SA58901†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-11481, VDB-13347, VDB-13346 and VDB-13345. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
