Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in VMware ESXi, Workstation and Fusion (Virtualization Software) (version now known). This affects some unknown processing of the component Shader Translator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
VMware ESXi (6.7 before ESXi670-201904101-SG and 6.5 before ESXi650-201903001), Workstation (15.x before 15.0.3 and 14.x before 14.1.6), Fusion (11.x before 11.0.3 and 10.x before 10.1.6) contain multiple out-of-bounds read vulnerabilities in the shader translator. Exploitation of these issues requires an attacker to have access to a virtual machine with 3D graphics enabled. Successful exploitation of these issues may lead to information disclosure or may allow attackers with normal user privileges to create a denial-of-service condition on their own VM. The workaround for these issues involves disabling the 3D-acceleration feature. This feature is not enabled by default on ESXi and is enabled by default on Workstation and Fusion.
The bug was discovered 04/11/2019. The weakness was shared 04/15/2019 by Richard Zhu with Fluoroacetate (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vmware.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-5517 since 01/07/2019. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371743 (VMware Workstation (14.x,15.x), Fusion (10.x,11.x) Multiple Out-of-Bounds Read Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2019-0006)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 107541†). The entries VDB-132693, VDB-132694, VDB-133418 and VDB-133420 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
