Apache Tomcat up to 6.0.39/7.0.53/8.0.5 XML Parser access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apache Tomcat up to 6.0.39/7.0.53/8.0.5 (Application Server Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component XML Parser Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Apache Tomcat before 6.0.40, 7.x before 7.0.54, and 8.x before 8.0.6 does not properly constrain the class loader that accesses the XML parser used with an XSLT stylesheet, which allows remote attackers to (1) read arbitrary files via a crafted web application that provides an XML external entity declaration in conjunction with an entity reference, related to an XML External Entity (XXE) issue, or (2) read files associated with different web applications on a single Tomcat instance via a crafted web application.

The weakness was presented 05/21/2014 by Security Team with Tomcat Security Team as Fixed in Apache Tomcat 8.0.8 as confirmed release notes (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tomcat.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0119 since 12/03/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Required for exploitation is a authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

In limited circumstances it was possible for a malicious web application to replace the XML parsers used by Tomcat to process XSLTs for the default servlet, JSP documents, tag library descriptors (TLDs) and tag plugin configuration files. The injected XML parser(s) could then bypass the limits imposed on XML external entities and/or have visibility of the XML files processed for other web applications deployed on the same Tomcat instance.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74247 (Apache Tomcat 7.0.x < 7.0.54 XML Parser Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185089 (HP-UX Apache Server Suite Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03102)).

Upgrading to version 6.0.41, 7.0.54 or 8.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93368), Tenable (74247), SecurityFocus (BID 67669†), OSVDB (107453†) and Secunia (SA58709†).
