Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Apache Tomcat 8.0.0/8.0.1/8.0.3 (Application Server Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component AJP Request Handler. The manipulation as part of a Zero Length leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
java/org/apache/coyote/ajp/AbstractAjpProcessor.java in Apache Tomcat 8.x before 8.0.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (thread consumption) by using a "Content-Length: 0" AJP request to trigger a hang in request processing.
The issue has been introduced in 09/03/2013. The weakness was published 03/27/2014 as Fixed in Apache Tomcat 8.0.5 as confirmed release notes (Website). The advisory is shared at tomcat.apache.org. The public release has been coordinated with Apache. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0095 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A regression was introduced in 1519838 that caused AJP requests to hang if an explicit content length of zero was set on the request. The hanging request consumed a request processing thread which could lead to a denial of service.
After 3 months, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at tomcat.apache.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 205 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74248 (Apache Tomcat 8.0.x < 8.0.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers.
Upgrading to version 8.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The release notes contains the following remark:
This was fixed in revision 1578392.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93366), Tenable (74248), SecurityFocus (BID 67673†), OSVDB (107451†) and Secunia (SA59873†).
