Apache Tomcat up to 6.0.39/7.0.53/8.0.5 Content-Length Header numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Apache Tomcat up to 6.0.39/7.0.53/8.0.5 (Application Server Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Content-Length Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in java/org/apache/tomcat/util/buf/Ascii.java in Apache Tomcat before 6.0.40, 7.x before 7.0.53, and 8.x before 8.0.4, when operated behind a reverse proxy, allows remote attackers to conduct HTTP request smuggling attacks via a crafted Content-Length HTTP header.

The weakness was disclosed 03/27/2014 as Fixed in Apache Tomcat 8.0.5 as confirmed release notes (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at tomcat.apache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-0099 since 12/03/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The advisory points out:

The code used to parse the request content length header did not check for overflow in the result. This exposed a request smuggling vulnerability when Tomcat was located behind a reverse proxy that correctly processed the content length header.

After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78187 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : Apache Tomcat vulnerability (SOL15432)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185089 (HP-UX Apache Server Suite Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03102)).

Upgrading to version 6.0.41, 7.0.54 or 8.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The release notes contains the following remark:

This was fixed in revision 1578812.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93369), Tenable (78187), SecurityFocus (BID 67668†), OSVDB (107452†) and Secunia (SA57879†). The entries VDB-13383, VDB-13384, VDB-13385 and VDB-13386 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
