Details
A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox, Firefox ESR and Thunderbird (Web Browser) (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Spectre Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A mechanism was discovered that removes some bounds checking for string, array, or typed array accesses if Spectre mitigations have been disabled. This vulnerability could allow an attacker to create an arbitrary value in compiled JavaScript, for which the range analysis will infer a fully controlled, incorrect range in circumstances where users have explicitly disabled Spectre mitigations. *Note: Spectre mitigations are currently enabled for all users by default settings.*. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 60.6, Firefox ESR < 60.6, and Firefox < 66.
The bug was discovered 03/19/2019. The weakness was presented 04/26/2019 by Markus Vervier (Nils) with X41 D-Sec GmbH (Website). The advisory is available at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-9793 since 03/14/2019. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/11/2025).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 38 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 247353 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2019-9793), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157940 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for firefox (ELSA-2019-0623)).
