A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Mozilla Firefox, Firefox ESR and Thunderbird (Web Browser) (version now known). This affects some unknown processing of the component IonMonkey JIT Compiler. The manipulation as part of a Proto Mutation leads to a type conversion vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-704. The product does not correctly convert an object, resource, or structure from one type to a different type. Incorrect handling of __proto__ mutations may lead to type confusion in IonMonkey JIT code and can be leveraged for arbitrary memory read and write. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 66.0.1, Firefox ESR < 60.6.1, and Thunderbird < 60.6.1.
The bug was discovered 03/22/2019. The weakness was published 04/26/2019 by Markus Vervier (Nils) with X41 D-Sec GmbH (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-9813 since 03/14/2019. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 35 days.
