Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL 0.9.8/1.0.0/1.0.1 (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block of the component Handshake Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity.
The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was disclosed 06/05/2014 by Masashi Kikuchi with Lepidum Co. Ltd. as secadv_20140605.txt as confirmed advisory (Website) via JPCERT/CC. The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-0224 since 12/03/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600. The biggest reason why the bug hasn’t been found for over 16 years is that code reviews were insufficient, especially from experts who had experiences with TLS/SSL implementation. If the reviewers had enough experiences, they should have been verified OpenSSL code in the same way they do their own code. They could have detected the problem. Fuzzing may have worked.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3257 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74348 (RHEL 5 / 6 : openssl097a and openssl098e (RHSA-2014:0626)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185081 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03046)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8za, 1.0.0m or 1.0.1h eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
The fix was developed by Stephen Henson of the OpenSSL core team partly based on an original patch from KIKUCHI Masashi.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93586), Tenable (74348), SecurityFocus (BID 67898†), Secunia (SA58403†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030336†). Further details are available at ccsinjection.lepidum.co.jp. The entries VDB-13457, VDB-13456, VDB-13455 and VDB-13454 are pretty similar.
