Details
A vulnerability has been found in FasterXML jackson-databind up to 2.9.8 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Default Typing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A Polymorphic Typing issue was discovered in FasterXML jackson-databind 2.x before 2.9.9. When Default Typing is enabled (either globally or for a specific property) for an externally exposed JSON endpoint, the service has the mysql-connector-java jar (8.0.14 or earlier) in the classpath, and an attacker can host a crafted MySQL server reachable by the victim, an attacker can send a crafted JSON message that allows them to read arbitrary local files on the server. This occurs because of missing com.mysql.cj.jdbc.admin.MiniAdmin validation.
The bug was discovered 05/11/2019. The weakness was released 05/17/2019 (GitHub Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-12086 since 05/13/2019. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236644 (Alibaba Cloud Linux 3 : 0020: pki-core:10.6 (ALINUX3-SA-2021:0020)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176909 (Debian Security Update for jackson-databind (DSA 4452-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.9.9 eliminates this vulnerability.
