A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 29.0.1 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function nsEventListenerManager::CompileEventHandlerInternal. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 12/10/2013. The weakness was disclosed 06/10/2014 by Tyson Smith and Jesse Schwartzentruber with BlackBerry as MFSA2014-51 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-1540 since 01/16/2014. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 182 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74444 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (888a0262-f0d9-11e3-ba0c-b4b52fce4ce8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195520 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firefox Vulnerabilities (USN-2243-1)).
Upgrading to version 30.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
