A vulnerability classified as critical was found in SGI IRIX 6.2/6.3/6.4 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function truncate of the component XFS File System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The truncate function in IRIX 6.x does not properly check for privileges when the file is in the xfs file system, which allows local users to delete the contents of arbitrary files.
The issue has been introduced in 03/01/1996. The weakness was published 01/09/1997 by Last Stage (Website). The advisory is shared for download at patches.sgi.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2000-0798. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at downloads.securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
