OpenSSL up to 0.9.7a RSA Key Handling

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.7a. Impacted is an unknown function of the component RSA Key Handling. Executing a manipulation can lead to an unknown weakness. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0147. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available. Applying a patch is advised to resolve this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.7a (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component RSA Key Handling. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

OpenSSL does not use RSA blinding by default, which allows local and remote attackers to obtain the server s private key by determining factors using timing differences on (1) the number of extra reductions during Montgomery reduction, and (2) the use of different integer multiplication algorithms ("Karatsuba" and normal).

The issue has been introduced in 09/24/2000. The weakness was released 03/14/2003 by David Brumley and Dan Boneh (Website). The advisory is shared for download at crypto.stanford.edu. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0147. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 901 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11267 (OpenSSL < 0.9.6j / 0.9.7b Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38356 (OpenSSL RSA Timing Attack Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at securityfocus.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1887.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11547), Tenable (11267), SecurityFocus (BID 7101†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-3644†). Additional details are provided at securityfocus.com. Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-20218.
