A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.7a (Network Encryption Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component SSL/TLS Connection Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The SSL and TLS components for OpenSSL 0.9.6i and earlier, 0.9.7, and 0.9.7a allow remote attackers to perform an unauthorized RSA private key operation via a modified Bleichenbacher attack that uses a large number of SSL or TLS connections using PKCS #1 v1.5 padding that cause OpenSSL to leak information regarding the relationship between ciphertext and the associated plaintext, aka the "Klima-Pokorny-Rosa attack."

The issue has been introduced in 09/24/2000. The weakness was presented 03/24/2003 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0131 since 03/13/2003. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 911 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15125 (Debian DSA-288-1 : openssl - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
