A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01/5.5 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component SSL Handler. Internet Explorer 5.5 and earlier allows remote attackers to display a URL in the address bar that is different than the URL that is actually being displayed, which could be used in web site spoofing attacks, aka the "Web page spoofing vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was released 05/07/2001 by Hasan Alpaslan Sinanoglu with Microsoft as MS01-027 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-0339. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
