Details
A vulnerability was found in Oracle Database Server up to 9.0.1 (Database Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Log File Handler. The manipulation of the argument ORACLE_HOME as part of a Environment Variable leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:
oracle program in Oracle 8.0.x, 8.1.x and 9.0.1 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on an Oracle log trace (.trc) file that is created in an alternate home directory identified by the ORACLE_HOME environment variable.
The weakness was disclosed 08/31/2001 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-1041. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 3135†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-5838†). The entry VDB-17690 is pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
