CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Netscape Browser up to 8.0.3.3. Affected is the function nsStandardURL::BuildNormalizedSpec of the component Host URL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the International Domain Name (IDN) support in Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6 and earlier, and Netscape 8.0.3.3 and 7.2, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a hostname with all "soft" hyphens (character 0xAD), which is not properly handled by the NormalizeIDN call in nsStandardURL::BuildNormalizedSpec.

The bug was discovered 09/09/2005. The weakness was published 09/08/2005 by Tom Ferris (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security-protocols.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-2871 since 09/09/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

The exploit is shared for download at security-protocols.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20592 (Ubuntu 4.10 / 5.04 : mozilla, mozilla-thunderbird, mozilla-firefox vulnerabilities (USN-181-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117812 (CentOS Security Update for Thunderbird (CESA-2005:791)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at netscape.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22207), Exploit-DB (1224), Tenable (20592), SecurityFocus (BID 14784†) and OSVDB (19255†).
