A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.6 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Unicode zero-width non-joiner Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Heap-based buffer overflow in Firefox before 1.0.7 and Mozilla Suite before 1.7.12 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an XBM image file that ends in a large number of spaces instead of the expected end tag.
The weakness was disclosed 09/23/2005 by Mats Palmgren as MFSA2005-58 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2701 since 08/26/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
