A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.6 on Unix/Linux (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown function of the component URL Call Handler. Firefox 1.0.6 and Mozilla 1.7.10 allows attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in a URL that is provided to the browser on the command line, which is sent unfiltered to bash.
The bug was discovered 09/06/2005. The weakness was disclosed 09/20/2005 by Peter Zelezny as Bug 307185 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2968 since 09/19/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115281 (Multiple Vulnerabilities in Firefox and Mozilla Suite (Mozilla Foundation MFSA 2005-58)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
