A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.6 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown function of the component XBL Control DOM Object Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Heap-based buffer overflow in Firefox before 1.0.7 and Mozilla Suite before 1.7.12 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an XBM image file that ends in a large number of spaces instead of the expected end tag.
The weakness was shared 09/23/2005 by moz_bug_r_a4 as MFSA2005-58 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-2701 since 08/26/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
