Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function nsStandardURL::BuildNormalizedSpec of the component Host URL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the International Domain Name (IDN) support in Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6 and earlier, and Netscape 8.0.3.3 and 7.2, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a hostname with all "soft" hyphens (character 0xAD), which is not properly handled by the NormalizeIDN call in nsStandardURL::BuildNormalizedSpec.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3777.
