A vulnerability was found in Ikonboard Ib219 (Forum Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the file search.cgi of the component Cookie Handler. The manipulation of the argument amembernamecookie with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in Search.cgi in Ikonboard ib219 and earlier allows remote attackers to overwrite files and gain privileges via .. (dot dot) sequences in the amembernamecookie cookie.
The bug was discovered 10/30/2001. The weakness was shared 12/06/2001 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2001-0841. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely.
