A vulnerability was found in Microsoft SQL Server 7.0/2000 (Database Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing of the component OLE DB Provider Handler. The manipulation of the argument OpenDataSource/OpenRowset with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. Buffer overflow in SQL Server 7.0 and 2000 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long OLE DB provider name to (1) OpenDataSource or (2) OpenRowset in an ad hoc connection.
The weakness was released 03/08/2002 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-0056. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19060 (Multiple MS-SQL-2000 (MS-SQL-8 ) threats - (I)).
