A vulnerability was found in Microsoft XML Core Services 2.6. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component XMLHTTP Control. XMLHTTP control in Microsoft XML Core Services 2.6 and later does not properly handle IE Security Zone settings, which allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files by specifying a local file as an XML Data Source.
The weakness was disclosed 12/15/2001 by jelmer as MS02-008 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-0057. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Applying the patch MS02-008 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
