A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (Web Browser). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component Local HTML Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a html injection vulnerability. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting vulnerability in Internet Explorer 6.0 allows remote attackers to execute scripts in the Local Computer zone via a URL that exploits a local HTML resource file, aka the "Cross-Site Scripting in Local HTML Resource" vulnerability.
The issue has been introduced in 08/27/2001. The weakness was released 05/29/2002 as MS02-023 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-0189. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
