A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01/6.0 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Content Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 and 6.0 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via malformed Content-Disposition and Content-Type header fields that cause the application for the spoofed file type to pass the file back to the operating system for handling rather than raise an error message, aka the first variant of the "Content Disposition" vulnerability.
The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was published 05/29/2002 by Yuu Arai as MS02-023 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-0193. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 933 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
