PHP 4.4.0 PCRE Library Regular Expression memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in PHP 4.4.0 (Programming Language Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component PCRE Library. The manipulation as part of a Regular Expression leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

fopen_wrappers.c in PHP 4.4.0, and possibly other versions, does not properly restrict access to other directories when the open_basedir directive includes a trailing slash, which allows PHP scripts in one directory to access files in other directories whose names are substrings of the original directory.

The bug was discovered 09/27/2005. The weakness was presented 10/31/2005 by Stefan Esser with Hardened-PHP Project (Website). The advisory is shared for download at hardened-php.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-3054 since 09/26/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 40 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20624 (Ubuntu 4.10 / 5.04 : php4 vulnerability (USN-207-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12201 (PHP Safedir Restriction Bypass Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (20624), SecurityFocus (BID 14957†), OSVDB (19712†), Secunia (SA17557†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-9426†).
