A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Aeromail up to 1.40. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the file message.php of the component Subject Handler. Cross-site scripting vulnerability in message.php for AeroMail before 1.45 allows remote attackers to execute Javascript as an AeroMail user via an email message with the script in the Subject line.
The bug was discovered 03/03/2002. The weakness was disclosed 08/12/2002 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-0411. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 162 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:message.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10574 (AeroMail JavaScript Execution Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 1.45 eliminates this vulnerability.
