A vulnerability was found in Endymion Mailman Webmail up to 3.0. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file mmstdo*.cgi. The manipulation of the argument ALTERNATE_TEMPLATES with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in Endymion MailMan before 3.1 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) and a null character in the ALTERNATE_TEMPLATES parameter for various mmstdo*.cgi programs.
The weakness was presented 08/12/2002 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at online.securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-0417. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10524 (Endymion MailMan Alternate Templates File Disclosure Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 833.
