A vulnerability was found in SquirrelMail 1.2.2 (Mail Client Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file read_body.php of the component javascript URL Handler. The manipulation of the argument img with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in read_body.php in SquirrelMail before 1.2.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary Javascript via a javascript: URL in an IMG tag.
The weakness was shared 12/31/2002 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1649 since 03/28/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim.
