Apple QuickTime up to 7.0.3 MOV Movie memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.0.3 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown function of the component MOV Movie Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in QuickTime.qts in Apple QuickTime Player 7.0.3 and iTunes 6.0.1 (3) and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and execute arbitrary code via a .mov file with (1) a Movie Resource atom with a large size value, or (2) an stsd atom with a modified Sample Description Table size value, and possibly other vectors involving media files. NOTE: item 1 was originally identified by CVE-2005-4127 for a pre-patch announcement, and item 2 was originally identified by CVE-2005-4128 for a pre-patch announcement.

The bug was discovered 12/14/2005. The weakness was disclosed 12/21/2005 by Tom Ferris (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security-protocols.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-4092 since 12/08/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20395 (QuickTime < 7.0.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38513 (Apple QuickTime Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2006-01-10)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16148. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4086.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23651), Tenable (20395), SecurityFocus (BID 15732†), OSVDB (21840†) and Secunia (SA18149†). The entries VDB-1965, VDB-1967, VDB-1966 and VDB-1968 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
