A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.0/7.0.1/7.0.2/7.0.3 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component TIFF Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in Apple Quicktime before 7.0.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) QuickTime Image File (QTIF), (2) PICT, or (3) JPEG format image with a long data field.

The weakness was disclosed 01/11/2006 by Dejun Meng with Fortinet (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at docs.info.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2340 since 07/21/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20395 (QuickTime < 7.0.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38513 (Apple QuickTime Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2006-01-10)).
