A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in phpGB 1.10. Affected is an unknown code of the component Delete Entry Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in phpGB before 1.20 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTML or script into guestbook pages, which is executed when the administrator deletes the entry.

The bug was discovered 09/09/2002. The weakness was presented 04/22/2003 by ppp-design (Website). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-1480. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 225 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10898 (phpGB HTML Injection Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 1.20 eliminates this vulnerability.
