Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Ethereal 0.9.12 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component OSI Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The OSI dissector in Ethereal 0.9.12 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via invalid IPv4 or IPv6 prefix lengths, possibly triggering a buffer overflow.
The weakness was released 07/24/2003 by Timo Sirainen (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ethereal.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-0429 since 06/13/2003. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15161 (Debian DSA-324-1 : ethereal - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115007 (Red Hat Ethereal Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
