A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Ethereal 0.9.12 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component SPNEGO Dissector. The SPNEGO dissector in Ethereal 0.9.12 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via an invalid ASN.1 value.
The weakness was disclosed 07/24/2003 by Timo Sirainen (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ethereal.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0430 since 06/13/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12373 (RHEL 2.1 : ethereal (RHSA-2003:077)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115007 (Red Hat Ethereal Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
