A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7 Beta 2 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function createTextRange of the component Radio Button Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and 7 Beta 2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a certain createTextRange call on a checkbox object, which results in a dereference of an invalid table pointer.
The bug was discovered 02/10/2006. The weakness was disclosed 03/22/2006 by Stelian Ene (Website). The advisory is available at secunia.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-1359 since 03/22/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
After 3 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1826 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21210 (MS06-013: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (912812)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100034 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update Missing (MS06-013)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16035. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4275.
