A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component COM Object Handler. Unspecified vulnerability in Windows Explorer in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP1 and SP2, and Server 2003 SP1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via attack vectors involving COM objects and "crafted files and directories," aka the "Windows Shell Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was disclosed 04/11/2006 by National Infrastructure Security Co-ordination Centre with NISCC as MS06-015 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0012 since 11/09/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2245 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21212 (MS06-015: Vulnerabilities in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution (908531)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90305 (Microsoft Windows Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-015)).
Applying the patch MS06-015 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25554), Tenable (21212), SecurityFocus (BID 17464†), OSVDB (24516†) and Secunia (SA19606†).
