A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows Media Player 9/ME (Operating System). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component PNG Image Handler. The manipulation of the argument width/height with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Windows Media Player 9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PNG file containing large (1) width or (2) height values, aka the "PNG Processing Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 02/08/2005. The weakness was presented 02/08/2004 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1244 since 12/17/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16328 (MS05-009: Vulnerability in PNG Processing Could Allow Remote Code Execution (890261)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38410 (MSN Messenger Remote Buffer Overflow (MS05-009)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3132. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3220.
