A vulnerability was found in Microsoft ASP.NET (version now known). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing of the component Forms Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. The Microsoft .NET forms authentication capability for ASP.NET allows remote attackers to bypass authentication for .aspx files in restricted directories via a request containing a (1) "\" (backslash) or (2) "%5C" (encoded backslash), aka "Path Validation Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 11/03/2004 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0847 since 09/08/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16333 (MS05-004: ASP.NET Path Validation Vulnerability (887219)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90220 (Microsoft ASP.NET Path Validation Vulnerability (MS05-004)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3258.
