PHP 4.4.2/5.1.2 wordwrap length heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PHP 4.4.2/5.1.2. The impacted element is the function wordwrap. This manipulation of the argument length causes heap-based overflow. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2006-1990. No exploit is available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in PHP 4.4.2/5.1.2 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function wordwrap. The manipulation of the argument length with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the wordwrap function in string.c in PHP 4.4.2 and 5.1.2 might allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain long arguments that cause a small buffer to be allocated, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow in a memcpy function call, a different vulnerability than CVE-2002-1396.

The weakness was published 04/25/2006 by Leon Juranic (Website). The advisory is shared at infigo.hr. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1990 since 04/24/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21602 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : php (MDKSA-2006:091)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117691 (CentOS Security Update for PHP (CESA-2006:0568)).

Upgrading to version 5.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at php.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26001), Tenable (21602), OSVDB (24946†), Secunia (SA20676†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015979†). Similar entries are available at VDB-2422, VDB-29851, VDB-30809 and VDB-36950. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
