A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in phpBB (Forum Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the file search.php. The manipulation of the argument search_author with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in search.php for PhpBB 2.0.4 and 2.0.9 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTMl or web script via the search_author parameter.
The weakness was released 07/19/2004 by Ory Segal (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-2055 since 05/04/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim.
