A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in phpBB (Forum Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file privmsg.php. The manipulation of the argument redirect with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. CRLF injection vulnerability in PhpBB 2.0.4 and 2.0.9 allows remote attackers to perform HTTP Response Splitting attacks to modify expected HTML content from the server via (1) the mode parameter to privmsg.php or (2) the redirect parameter to login.php.
The weakness was shared 12/31/2004 by Ory Segal (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-2054 since 05/04/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
By approaching the search of inurl:privmsg.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13840 (phpBB < 2.0.10 Multiple XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12093 (PHPBB Multiple HTTP Response Splitting Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
