Details
A vulnerability was found in CVS and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation of the argument max-dotdot with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in the "Max-dotdot" CVS protocol command (serve_max_dotdot) for CVS 1.12.x through 1.12.8, and 1.11.x through 1.11.16, may allow remote attackers to cause a server crash, which could cause temporary data to remain undeleted and consume disk space.
The weakness was shared 08/06/2004 by Sebastian Krahmer (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0417 since 04/16/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12265 (CVS < 1.11.17 / 1.12.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38278 (CVS Multiple Vulnerabilities).
