CVS up to 1.12.8 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in CVS. It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

serve_notify in cvs 1.12.x through 1.12.8 and 1.11.x through 1.11.16 does not properly handle empty data lines which may allow remote attackers to perform an "out-of-bounds" write for a single byte to execute arbitrary code or modify critical program data.

The weakness was published 08/06/2004 by Sebastian Krahmer (Website). The advisory is shared for download at debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0418 since 04/16/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12265 (CVS < 1.11.17 / 1.12.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38278 (CVS Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2936.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (12265), SecurityFocus (BID 10499†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-4495†). Similar entries are available at VDB-22017, VDB-22018, VDB-22019 and VDB-22760. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
