Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in CVS. This affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
cvs 1.12.x through 1.12.8 and 1.11.x through 1.11.16 does not properly handle malformed "entry" lines which prevents a null terminator from being used and may lead to a denial of service (crash) modification of critical program data or arbitrary code execution.
The weakness was disclosed 08/06/2004 by Sebastian Krahmer (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0414 since 04/16/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13724 (Fedora Core 2 : cvs-1.11.17-2 (2004-170)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38278 (CVS Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2814.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16372), Tenable (13724), SecurityFocus (BID 10499†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-4492†). The entries VDB-22018, VDB-22019, VDB-22020 and VDB-22760 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
