A vulnerability was found in PowerPortal 1.1b/1.3/1.3b. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the file modules.php. The manipulation of the argument files with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in modules.php in PowerPortal 1.x allows remote attackers to list arbitrary directories via a .. (dot dot) in the files parameter.
The bug was discovered 06/28/2004. The weakness was disclosed 08/06/2004 by DarkBicho (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.info. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0664 since 07/12/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 39 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:modules.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
