A vulnerability classified as critical was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 10.5 6.0.12.1040 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function HandleAction. The manipulation of the argument ShowPreferences with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. Stack-based buffer overflow in the HandleAction function in RealPlayer 10.5 (6.0.12.1040) and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long ShowPreferences argument.
The bug was discovered 11/19/2004. The weakness was disclosed 10/06/2004 by NGSSoftware Insight Security Research with NGSSoftware Insight Security Research as confirmed advisory (CERT.org).
