A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 10.5 6.0.12.1040 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component RJS Filename Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in the parsing of Skin file names in RealPlayer 10.5 (6.0.12.1040) and earlier allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in an RJS filename.
The weakness was presented 10/06/2004 by NGSSoftware Insight Security Research with NGSSoftware Insight Security Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.info. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0192. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
